In 2002, there's nothing like getting banned by MTV to get a career cranking. In fact, it's the best thing that could have happened to New York singer/songwriter Custom.
The television network cast two thumbs down on Custom's outrageous ?Hey Mister,? a song that finds the singer taunting a father with vivid details of what he's been doing to the old man's daughter. It's every parent's nightmare but it's also got something that has been sorely lacking in a lot of new music: a stinging sense of humor.
?Hey Mister? has turned into a rock radio and college fave, but it's not the only solid track on this impressive debut disc. Straddling the line somewhere between beat poet and burnout, slacker, rapper and rocker, Custom (a.k.a. Duane Lavold) writes as effectively about assassins (?Streets?) as he does while detailing the travails of two guys who ruin their friendship while falling for the same woman on ?Morning Spank.?
?You don't really want to get involved in my life/It's scary, like a slurpee brain freeze,? he writes in ?Mess,? another one of the ridiculously catchy songs on Fast. Offbeat for sure, but Custom, who's an award-winning filmmaker already, sounds like he's got two careers going on the fast track now.
