David Brearley

A lieutenant colonel in the New Jersey Brigade during the Revolutionary War, Brearley became the chief justice of New Jersey before being selected to represent the state at the Constitutional Convention. There, he backed the rights of small states and chaired the Committee of Postponed Matters.
