Noyes BARBER, Congress, CT (1781-1844)

BARBER Noyes , a Representative from Connecticut; born in Groton, New London County, Conn., April 28, 1781; attended the common schools; engaged in mercantile pursuits; major of the Eighth Connecticut Regiment in the War of 1812; detailed to defend the coast towns during the blockade by the British Fleet; member of the State house of representatives in 1818; elected as a Republican to the Seventeenth Congress, an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth, an Adams to the Nineteenth and Twentieth, and an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-first through the Twenty-third Congresses (March 4, 1821-March 3, 1835); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1834 to the Twenty-fourth Congress; resumed mercantile pursuits; member of all Whig State conventions from 1836; died in Groton, Conn., January 3, 1844; interment in Starr Cemetery.
