Edward Dexter HOLBROOK, Congress, ID (1836-1870)

HOLBROOK Edward Dexter , a Delegate from Idaho; born in Elyria, Lorain County, Ohio, May 6, 1836; attended the common schools and Oberlin (Ohio) College; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1859 and commenced practice in Elyria; Ohio, Weaverville, Calif., and Placerville, Idaho; lawyer, private practice; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-ninth and succeeding Congress (March 4, 1865-March 3, 1869); censured by the U.S. House of Representatives on February 4, 1869, for use of unparliamentary language; was not a candidate for reelection to the Forty-first Congress in 1868; shot by Charles H. Douglas in Idaho City, Idaho, on June 17, 1870, and died from his wounds in that city the next day; interment in the Masonic Burial Ground.
