John Lindsay

maverick politician who served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (1955–57) and two terms as mayor of New York City (1966–74). Lindsay presided over New York City during a turbulent period marked by racial strife, strikes, near financial disaster, and an alienation of the middle class. In 1969, he lost the Republican mayoral primary election, but went on to win the general election as the candidate of the Liberal and Independent parties. He became a Democrat in 1971, and launched several unsuccessful bids for the presidency.
