After a few months the Dodgers told him to shave it off, and facial hair would have to wait until Reggie Jackson arrived at Oakland spring training in 1972; played 11 seasons with five teams; singles hitter who in 1938 hit .452 (20-for-43) as a pinch-hitter with St. Louis; short stint as a minor league manager ended in suspension when he attacked an umpire midway through the 1947 season; cause of death was not given
