submarine-throwing relief pitcher for the Kansas City Royals; a three-time all-star, “Quiz” led the league in saves five times during his career and helped the Royals garner two AL pennants and the 1985 World Series; got the save in the infamous “Pine Tar Game”; finished his career with 244 saves and a 2.76 ERA in 12 seasons; after eight years with the Royals he was released in 1988, spent a year-and-a-half with St. Louis and then retired after a brief stay with San Francisco; described as a “prankster” and “quick-witted” by teammates, who spent evenings as an audience to Quisenberry's nightly antics in the bullpen; diagnosed with brain cancer in December 1997; on May 30, 1998 an emotional crowd was on hand to see him inducted into the Royals' Hall of Fame; of a brain tumor
