Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist whose work gives an intelligent, ironic picture of post-Civil War society life. Wharton's books include The House of Mirth (1905), The Custom of the Country (1913), The Age of Innocence (1920), filmed by Martin Scorsese in 1993, and Ethan Frome (1911) also filmed in 1993.
