Raised in a suburb of Houston, Texas, he helped spark the surge in popularity of country music in the early 1990's. He released his first album, Killin' Time, in 1989, and it became an immediate hit, generating a number of hit singles and winning a string of country music awards, including the Country Music Association's Best New Male Vocalist. He married TV actress Lisa Hartman-Black in 1991.
