Peer began plucking the strings for the Chick Webb Orchestra in 1937. He backed up stars such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Lena Horne, Johnny Mathis, and Barbra Streisand. For over three decades he worked with pianist Bobby Short at New York clubs, most recently at the Cafe Carlyle. He made cameo appearances in the movies Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) and For Love or Money (1993).
