The Czardas Dance

The Question:

I am trying to identify the Russian dance where the "dancers" have their arms crossed in front of them while they bouncing up and down and alternately extending one of their legs out in front of them. Can you help on this one?

The Answer:

The difficult dance you refer to is called the czardas, or char'dash (with the emphasis on the first syllable). Although people often associate it with Russia, it is actually a folk dance of the Magyar, the dominant people of Hungary.

In our online encyclopedia you can find out more information about the Magyar people, or about other folk dances.
