    On this date in 1998, Hurricane Mitch peaked with sustained winds of 180 mph marking it as the fourth most powerful Atlantic basin storm on record. The storm stalled off the coast of Honduras before moving inland and decimating areas of Central America. In all, 10,000 lives were claimed by Mitch and millions were left homeless.
