- Chilean Government Requests Foreign Aid (Mar. 1): After refusing contributions from foreign governments, Chile officials change course and request help—including generators, water filtration equipment and field hospitals—from other countries. Chile was devastated by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake on February 28. About 750 people were killed in the quake, while over 1.5 million were displaced.
