51st NHL All-Star Game. Date: Feb. 4 at the Pepsi Center in Denver; Coaches: Joel Quenneville, St. Louis (North America) and Jacques Martin, Ottawa (World); MVP: Bill Guerin, Boston right wing (North America)—three goals, two assists.
Starters were chosen by fan vote while reserves were selected by the NHL's Hockey Operations Department, after consultation with NHL general managers. Head coaches whose teams had the best winning percentage in the Eastern Conference (World) and Western Conference (North America) on Jan. 7 were named all-star head coaches.
Defenseman Ed Jovanovski, defenseman Scott Niedermayer, and left wing Simon Gagne were added to the North American team as injury replacements for Chris Pronger, Al MacInnis, and Vincent Damphousse, respectively. Defenseman Rob Blake assumed Pronger's spot in the starting lineup.
Right wing Milan Hejduk and right wing Sergei Samsonov were added to the World team as injury replacements for Alexander Mogilny and Jaromir Jagr, respectively. Hejduk assumed Jagr's spot in the starting lineup.
