1998 NHL Skills Competition

48th NHL All-Star Game. Date: Jan. 18 at General Motors Place in Vancouver; Coaches: Jacques Lemaire, New Jersey (North America) and Ken Hitchcock, Dallas (World); MVP: Teemu Selanne, Anaheim right wing (World) — three goals.

In 1998 with the winter Olympics looming, the NHL voted to abandon its usual all-star game format of Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference in favor of a game pitting the North American all-stars vs. the rest of the world's all stars.

Starters were chosen by fan vote while reserves were selected by the NHL's Hockey Operations Department, after consultation from various NHL general managers. Head coaches whose teams were leading the Eastern Conference and Western Conference on Dec. 15 were named all-star head coaches. A coin toss determined which team each would coach.

Mark Messier and Al MacInnis were added to the North American lineup and Jari Kurri and Igor Larionov to the World lineup as special selections by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
