Rush Hour 2| Director: | Brett Ratner | | Writer: | Jeff Nathanson | | New Line Cinema; PG-13; 88 minutes | | Release: | 7/01 | | Cast: | Chris Tucker, Jackie Chan, John Lone |
Truth in advertising: Rush Hour 2 reunites upper-register motormouth Chris Tucker and hyperkinetic martial-arts hero Jackie Chan in another breathless action comedy. This time, LAPD officer Carter (Tucker) is the one far from home. He meets up with inspector Lee (Chan) while vacationing in Hong Kong. Just moments later they're thrust into the middle of a counterfeiting ring. Like its predecessor, Rush Hour 2 turns the interracial cop-buddy template on its head, and hilariously at that. This ain't no Lethal Weapon. Chan and Tucker attack the audience with a one-two punch of physical comedy and shrill verbal abuse. Their rapport has improved while many of the fight sequences and jokes hold steady. (Chan is famous for upping the ante in his many sequels.) Zhang Ziyi of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame enters the mix as the head counterfeiter's high-kicking henchwoman. In short, Rush Hour 2 provides fast and silly summer entertainment.
