Schlessinger received a BS in biological sciences from the State University of New York at Stonybrook, two master's degrees and a doctorate in physiology from Columbia University, and a post-doctoral certificate in counseling from the University of Southern California. She is also a licensed marriage, family, and child counselor, and has practiced for 12 years. Schlessinger has served on the faculties at the University of Southern California and Pepperdine University, and has also taught at UCLA and the University of California at Irvine. Around 1980 Schlessinger began working in radio, eventually hosting her own top-rated radio talk show, The Dr. Laura Schlessinger Program. An Orthodox Jew, Schlessinger gives advice to callers, often using the Bible or religious teachings for guidance. Schlessinger has also written several books for adults and children.
