Get Over It

Director:Tommy O'Haver
Writer:R. Lee Fleming
Miramax; PG-13; 90 minutes
Release:3/01
Cast:Kirsten Dunst, Ben Foster, Melissa Sagemiller

The most difficult thing about the current wave of teen cinema, other than watching it, is keeping the titles straight. Get Over It brings together talent from such films as Bring It On, Whatever It Takes, and She's All That. Like Clueless and 10 Things I Hate About You, the film tacks on Shakespeare. A shameless gesture, but it shows that they're trying.

High school romance storylines can be deduced from character profiles. Berke (Ben Foster) loses his adored girlfriend Allison (Melissa Sagemiller) to a British teen pop star. Both his ex and her new beau are starring in the school's rock 'n roll production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Kind singer-songwriter wannabee Kelly (Kirsten Dunst) agrees to help Berke with music lessons. Martin Short contributes as hilarious cameo as drama teacher Dr. Desmond Forrest Oates.

Nothing surprising here. Nevertheless, Get Over It proves that an energetic cast and crew can extract a decent youngster romance from tired material.
