98 Degrees

  • Universal

Teen 'zine heartthrobs pumping slick and soulless preprocessed pop in the same vein as Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync, 98 Degrees play straight to the masses on this utterly lifeless set.

Syrupy piano-based ballads like "Yesterday's Letter" and the excruciatingly sweet "My Everything" are matched with occasionally more uptempo fare like "Never Giving Up" or the ultra-smooth first single "Give Me Just One More Night (Una Noche)."

It's all extraordinarily calculating, with the same mega-production layers, bland vocals and repetitive lyrical themes found on nearly every track. What makes that even more frightening is that the mega-marketing on teen target audiences works perfectly. MTV and The Disney Channel are already on board, and the world tour starts in January. What more could one ask for? 98 Degrees' last album sold five million copies. Don't be surprised if this one outdistances that—by far.
