Sophie Marceau

(Sophie Maupu)
Born: 11/17/1966
Birthplace: Paris, France

Fearing a life in a job similar to one she had unloading a produce truck, the then-thirteen-year-old Sophie Maupu (now Marceau) answered a modeling agency advertisement, which led to her starring role in France's top-grossing film, the teen comedy La Boum (The Party) (1980). She won France's most prestigious film award, the Cesar (for most promising newcomer) three years later for its sequel, La Boum II. She began a controversial relationship to Polish director Andrzej Zulawski, with whom she has one son, Vincent. She was an established star in Europe by the time she was cast as the Princess of Wales in Mel Gibson's Braveheart (1995), her English-speaking debut, which led to her portrayal of the title character in Anna Karenina (1997). She appeared as the lead in the art-house movie Firelight that same year. James Bond fans saw her as Elektra King in 1999's installment, The World is Not Enough.
