When a much-loathed farmer is murdered, his workers and fellow landowners are shocked to learn that he left his land to his seven workers. His intentions were not altruistic. In fact, the bitter old man had hoped that his bequest would spark unrest among the workers and be the undoing of the surrounding gentry. The drama unfolds as the peasants attempt to democratically run the farm and encounter obstacles that grow out of their ignorance as well as human nature. They also try to figure out the symbolism of the appearance of a crazed woman in the chicken coop.
