A character actor who began appearing on the stage as a child, Rains earned four Oscar nominations for his roles in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), Casablanca (1942), Mr. Skeffington (1944), and Notorious (1946). He also delivered memorable performances as the psychiatrist in Now, Voyager (1942), as Herod in The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), and as a diplomat in Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Died: 5/30/1967
