The poor Miami neighborhood where Rourke was raised helped craft his tough looks and demeanor. His intensity was conveyed in films like Barfly (1987), 9 ¹/2 Weeks (1986), and The Rainmaker (1997). Other films include The Follow (2001). Rourke is married to actress and model Carre Otis, who he met on the set of Wild Orchid (1990).
