Young actor best known for portraying the quintessential slacker opposite Winona Ryder in Reality Bites (1994) and the sensitive young student in Dead Poets Society (1989). Hawke's studied acting style is sometimes questioned for its authenticity, but he has more often won over both critics and audiences. Hawke, the husband of actress Uma Thurman, has been cast in several lead roles recently, including Great Expectations (1998), Snow Falling on Cedars (1999), and Hamlet (2000). He was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as a rookie detective in Training Day (2001).
