Actor who took to the stage and then film, after surviving three years in a Nazi POW camp during World War II. Known for his character roles as an endearing, hapless Englishman, his films include A Doll's House (1973), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), and A Room with a View (1986), for which he received an Academy Award nomination. He was married for several years to actress Virginia McKenna and died in 1992 of an AIDS-related illness.
