He is best-known for his portrayals of steely eyed, impassive tough guys, as the harmonica-playing gunslinger in Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West (1969) and the vengeance-seeking vigilante in Death Wish (1974) and its sequels. His other film credits include The Magnificent Seven (1960), The Great Escape (1963), and The Dirty Dozen (1967). He was married to actress Jill Ireland from 1968 until her death in 1990.
