Barrel-chested, rough-hewn actor whose niche of portraying tough cops has found its best home in the highly regarded television series, Hill Street Blues (1985–87) and NYPD Blue (1993– ). Franz has enjoyed success on the big screen, in movies such as American Buffalo (1996), Body Double (1984), and City of Angels (1998), but he is widely considered one of the best actors on the small screen. His portrayal of the troubled, racist but ultimately redeemable detective Andy Sipowicz has earned him best actor awards from the Emmys, the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild, and the Viewers for Quality Television.
