Patti Smith musician; author; visual artist

Birthplace: Chicago
Best known for her influential albums of the 1970s, including Horses (1975) and Easter (1978), Smith is also a performance artist, poet, and visual artist. She took a hiatus from recording in 1980 that was interrupted only by 1988's Dream of Life until the releases Gone Again (1996), Peace and Noise (1997), Gung Ho (2000) and Trampin' (2004).
