The Sweet Hereafter

Hands down, the best movie of 1997. This adaptation of Russell Banks's haunting novel about the aftermath of a school-bus accident brims with unforgettable performances, especially Holm as a tormented, ambulance-chasing lawyer and Polley as an ephemeral teen. Sorely overlooked at Oscar time, it's a little film that masterfully asks big questions, about God, fate, revenge and the seeming inevitability of tragedy.
