With the media and the White House (ostensibly) on their worst behavior in recent months, one would think political humorist Franken, Lateline 's creator and star, would have plenty of fodder for this newsroom comedy. Unfortunately, most of the episodes were filmed PML (pre-Monica Lewinski), so several spoofs on current events are old news. On the whole Lateline's political barking doesn't have Franken's usual bite, but the former SNL jokester is doing something right because viewers are hooked: Lateline is one of NBC's highest-rated debuts of the year. His lively supporting cast will no doubt keep people watching, particularly Ferrer as the sneering producer and Foxworth as the air-headed anchorman.
