The comparisons are inevitable: Williamson also penned Scream and the upcoming Scream II. Hewitt, like fellowParty of Fiver Neve Campbell plays the good girl. But I Know What You Did Last Summer is one of the formulaic slasher flicks Scream lampooned. After a night of celebrating Helen Shivers's (Gellar) crowning as Croaker Queen in a local beauty pageant, a BMW full of drunk just-graduated high school students runs over a pedestrian. Unwilling to jeopardize their futures, the kids dump the body in the ocean. After a guilt-ridden year at college, the kids return home to a single-sentence letter that bears the title line. The tormented kids suspect each other until the bodies begin to pile up and they band together to track down the killer.
