Academy Award -winning film actor whose tough screen persona was the archetypal hero of the western. Wayne was at his best in the “cavalry trilogy” of westerns directed by John Ford. His films include Stagecoach (1939), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), and True Grit (1969). Died: 6/11/1979
