Jazz tenor and soprano saxophonist and composer who was a leader of the New Wave jazz movement. Coltrane began his career playing in big bands and gained wide respect and fame for his stylistic innovations while playing with Miles Davis in the 1950s. His modal approach and spiritual depth influenced the free jazz explorations of the 1960s and 1970s. Died: 7/17/1967
