Gerald R. Ford Age: 93
38th president of the United States, 1974–1977. The first president not to be elected as either president or vice-president by a popular vote, Ford took office after President Nixon resigned and faced the unenviable task of restoring stability to the presidency and to the government in general. The defining act of his presidency was his unpopular decision to grant Nixon a full pardon, in order to allow the country to move on. Died: Rancho Mirage, Calif., Dec. 26, 2006
