George Ryan, former governor of Illinois, was convicted in April of racketeering, conspiracy, mail fraud, tax fraud, and making false statements to the FBI. Authorities said Ryan accepted gifts for himself and his family in return for political favors and state business. He was sentenced to more than six years in jail in September. In 2003 he commuted the sentences of 167 inmates on death row, calling capital punishment fundamentally flawed. Information Please® Database, © 2007 Pearson Education, Inc. All rights reserved.
