novelist whose 1974 book Jaws, about a great white shark that preys upon a New England coastal town, terrified beachcombers and spent more than 40 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list. Steven Spielberg directed the film adaptation of the book. Benchley's other novels include The Deep, Beast, and White Shark. Died: Princeton, N.J., Feb. 12, 2006
