Pat Robertson, evangelist, sparked international outrage in August when he suggested that the United States should assassinate Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. “If he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it,” Robertson said on his television show, The 700 Club. “It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war. And I don't think any oil shipments will stop.” Venezuela has the largest oil reserves of any country excluding the Middle East. Robertson later retracted the statement.
