Mikhail Khodorkovsky,

founder of Russia's Yukos oil company and once the country’s wealthiest man, was convicted by a Russian court in May and sentenced to nine years in prison. He was found guilty of fraud, embezzlement, tax evasion, and other charges. The conviction was widely considered retaliation for publicly challenging President Vladimir Putin and for his support of opposition figures.
