Jimmy Smith Age: 76
jazz organist whose scintillating music, called “soul jazz,” combined jazz, R&B, and bebop. He played on a Hammond B-3 electronic organ, an instrument not previously associated with jazz. In Jan. 2005, the National Endowment for the Arts designated Mr. Smith a Jazz Master, the nation's highest honor for jazz. Died: Scottsdale, Ariz., Feb. 8, 2005
