William Pickering

Age: 93

former director of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (1954–1976) who oversaw many of the country's first exploits into space, including 1958's launch of the first spacecraft into orbit, Explorer I, and the first robotic missions to the Moon, Venus, and Mars.

Died: La Cañada Flintridge, Calif., March 15, 2004
