politician and public official, resigned as president of the University of Massachusetts in August, after months of intense pressure and criticism from Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. Bulger's brother, James “Whitey” Bulger, a local mob leader under indictment for murder and racketeering, has been a fugitive since 1994. In June, William Bulger testified before the U.S. House Government Reform Committee about his brother. Romney charged that the testimony was evasive and defiant, and said it proved Bulger was unfit to run the university. One of the most powerful and prominent politicians in the state, Bulger, a Democrat, served as the president of the state senate for 17 years.
