Tom Ridge,

former governor of Pennsylvania, was sworn in as the country's first secretary of homeland security in January. The department, established in 2002 in response to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, seeks to protect the country against terrorism and includes 22 agencies and 170,000 employees.
