Harrison A. Williams

Age: 81

politician who was New Jersey's only Democratic senator to be elected to four terms. First elected in 1959, Williams championed liberal causes, such as the rights of migrant workers, coal miners, and women. He wrote the Occupational Health and Safety Act. In 1981 he was convicted of bribery and conspiracy in the Abscam scandal and served a three-year sentence. He resigned from office in 1982.

Died: Bedminster, N.J., Nov. 18, 2001
