two-time All-Star outfielder with the Chicaco Cubs who won 1952 N.L. MVP honors despite the fact the Cubs finished fifth in the division; career .266–288–876 over 15 years with Cincinnati, Chicago-NL, St. Louis and the N.Y./San Francisco Giants; retired in 1959; stayed in baseball in several capacities, including scouting for the Giants until 1993. The cause of his death was not given. Died: Burlingame, Calif., Aug. 24
