A. R. Ammons

Age: 75

award-winning poet whose simple verse often disguised the depth of his work. Ammons wrote nearly 30 books of poetry and won scores of awards, including two National Book Awards, the Bollingen Prize in Poetry, and a National Book Critics Circle Award. His works include Garbage, Sphere, and A Coast of Trees.

Died: Ithaca, N.Y., Feb. 25, 2001
