In 1983, Rich and his partner Pincus Green, who was also pardoned, were charged with cheating the government out of nearly $50 million and doing business with Iran during the hostage crisis. Rich fled to Switzerland, where he lived in luxury. The Justice Department began a criminal investigation to determine if the pardon was related to nearly $1 million in gifts to the Democratic Party and Clinton's library given by Rich's ex-wife, Grammy Award–winning songwriter Denise Rich.
