Ring Lardner Jr.

Age: 85

Hollywood screenwriter who won two Academy Awards, but saw his career plunge into a free-fall after he refused to tell the House Un-American Activities Committee if he was a Communist. He was a member of the Hollywood 10, a blacklisted group of writers, directors, and producers who served prison sentences for refusing to answer the question before a group of hostile congressmen. He won writing Oscars for Woman of the Year and M*A*S*H. His father, Ring Lardner, was a humorist and short-story writer.
