David Merrick

Age: 88

Broadway impresario famous for his productions and his ruthless pursuit of publicity. Known as the “Abominable Showman,” Merrick remains one of the most prolific and profitable producers in Broadway history, having launched 88 shows, which include the Tony Award–winning Becket, Hello, Dolly!, and 42nd Street.

Died: London, April 26, 2000
