Julius Nyerere

Age: 77

symbol of the African independence movement who served as Tanzania's first president after leading the country to independence from Britain in 1961. After voluntarily stepping down from his post in 1985, Nyerere continued to work toward an end to the civil war in Burundi and the widespread violence plaguing central and southern Africa over the past decade.
