Fritz Shurmur

Age: 67

innovative and well-respected defensive coordinator for five NFL teams over two decades; instrumental in Green Bay's run to consecutive Super Bowls after the 1996 and 1997 seasons; began coaching in 1954 as a grad assistant at his alma mater Albion (Mich.) College; defensive coach at Univ. of Wyoming and later head coach from 1971-74; coached in the NFL at Detroit, New England, Los Angeles (Rams) and Phoenix before joining the Packers in 1994; followed Packers coach Mike Holmgren to Seattle in January of 1998; held a master's degree in education and wrote four books on defense; received an honorary doctorate from Albion in 1997. Shurmur died of cancer.
